Tonight I read Alma 47 which is all about Amalakiah's rise to power through the use of lying, deceit, and murder. It's irritating to read an account of someone who used no good means to obtain a position of power. My favorite part of this story happens a few chapters later, about 5 years later, and that's when Teancum puts a javelin into Amalakiah, ending his life. People may be able to attain powerful positions through deceitful ways, but those positions do not last. The power is superficial because it is of no eternal value. The greatest power comes to us through obedience to God's commandments and the blessings of the Priesthood in receiving eternal life. That's the power I seek after. I'm just grateful that those like Amalakiah don't retain their power forever, for they do much harm.
