I read a talk from October's Conference called Our Very Survival by Kevin R. Duncan of the Seventy. He spoke of the vital importance of following the prophet. He said, "the only sure and secure road to protection in this life comes from the prophets of God." He also spoke of how easy it is to find information on any topic now through the internet and how it is "easy to get caught in the trap of looking to the 'arm of flesh' for advice on everything." We need to remember that "we have access to the source of pure truth, even God Himself. We would do well to search out answers to our problems and questions by investigating what the Lord has revealed through his prophets." I feel that is a good reminder, especially since I love to read a lot of books filled with advice. I won't stop reading those, but I do want to incorporate more of the words of the prophets into my reading and study. He quoted President Benson's 14 fundamentals in Following the Prophet, 2 of which really stood out to me. They are that "the living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works," and "the living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet." I thank God to be alive when there is a living prophet on the earth! I sustain President Monson as a prophet of God and I want to be obedient to him and follow his example.
